#HumansOfHalkin: Meet Jennifer Blay, Accounts Manager

“I grew up in Walthamstow, East London in the late 80s. I was a rebel, not in a big way but enough to keep me moving between colleges without anything to show for it. It wasn’t until I got pregnant with my daughter that I really began to focus.

I started an Access business course, which I really enjoyed. I had her before I could finish it but something in me had clicked and I knew that I needed to do something business-related.

So I got a Higher National Diploma in Business Management and then a Degree in Business Studies, Accountancy and Finance. My career took off and has been a big focus ever since but it’s my kids that keep me ticking.

They are at the centre of everything I do and occupy every evening whether it’s buying fancy-dress costumes, reading books or helping with homework.

I want them to have the drive I’ve found because if there’s anything I’ve learned the real world isn’t easy, it’s why I got my daughter to juggle a job and college since she was 16.

Moving forward I want to travel more – maybe Asia, I’m not sure, but one thing is certain: when I retire, I want to spend my summers in England and my winters in Ghana for the heat!”
